General Guidelines For Choosing Images

Author:

Jennifer Sheahan

I can\'t emphasize enough how critical images are in Facebook advertising. They are the single most important aspect of your ad. Tests have been done using fabricated ads, with absolute gibberish in the headline and nonsensical ad copy but a fantastic, inviting image. And guess what? People clicked! It is estimated that 70of the success or failure of ads is determined by images and only 30by the headline and body combined. The image you select will make or break your ad.
When choosing photos keep in mind that Facebook is very particular about the user experience and insists that images in ads are appropriate. They will disapprove ads if they\'re not a good fit. In other words, images must make sense with the overall ad. According to Facebook, ads will be denied for the following reasons: if they\'re deemed inappropriate, irrelevant, racy, too suggestive, or too revealing.
Trying to find the right image is where most people stumble. You can go to iStockPhoto or Shutterstock or Flickr\'s Creative Commons to find photos. But you\'ve got to stay away from those traditional 'stock photo' type images that have a bunch of people dressed in business suits because those are obviously staged and formulaic and they don\'t appeal to people. You want your image to be one people can relate to. When you find a photo that works and is getting a really good clickthrough rate, then take that photograph and add a border to it or round the corners. Have another image with the same photo, where you add something else. You might want to add the price over the top of your image or something along those lines so that it stands out. Add a double border so it looks like it\'s a double mounted photograph, so you have a black border and then a red border. That stands out really well too. We always create a couple of different versions of every photo.
For quite some time, images based solely on logos or text weren\'t the most successful. In recent days, however, I\'ve started to notice some clever images using text. If you\'re going to go the photo-free route, you do have to be sure to make the image attention-grabbing and visually interesting. Generally speaking, we have more success when using photos. If it\'s possible for you to incorporate your logo or some text along with a photo, that is a great way to go too. Think big, bold images that speak to your ad on their own and be sure the image fits the whole space.
A great way to test the effectiveness of your ad\'s image is to step away from your computer and see if you can tell at a glance what is being advertised. You want people to understand what\'s in the photo without them having to look too closely at it. If it is eye-catching, makes sense, and seems to be speaking to the product or service you\'re offering, you\'re good to go!

Getting a "Bang For Your Buck" on Facebook

In recent weeks the cost of advertising on Facebook has skyrocketed. In our testing prior to February 2011, we had several ads getting 4-10 cent clicks. But those numbers are nearly impossible to achieve now. Change is happening all the time with Facebook ads and it\'s crucial to stay on top of things. A lot of money can be wasted if you approach Facebook advertising casually, without research. For instance, you cannot simply take a Google AdWords campaign and transfer it across to Facebook. Many people try this and they\'re often disappointed when those ads don\'t last much longer than 4 or 5 days.
Google Adwords converts better than Facebook (though costs more) for the majority of products & services. This is primarily because when searching on Google, people are often in buying mode, where Facebook users are busy browsing photos and playing Mafia Wars. It\'s a completely different mind set. It can take quite a bit longer to generate a positive ROI with Facebook than with Google AdWords. To advertise successfully on Facebook, it\'s important to keep this in mind. The ROI is there, we just have to approach the sales process differently. The best way to economize with Facebook ads is to keep creating variations of your as, with different headlines and unique images that keep viewers intrigued- and to monitor your ads very carefully.
So you know that a different approach is needed to keep your ads running successfully. But please don\'t neglect the second- and equally important- piece, which is to see that your offer is set up properly. It is essential to have a well-established sales funnel that consistently converts visitors into buyers. On Facebook, you often won\'t make money instantly on the front end. If you\'re buying traffic, sending it to a site, and expecting them to buy instantly, it will be extremely difficult to have a positive ROI. Facebook rewards advertisers with a lower CPC if traffic is sent to a fan page rather than an outside website. So the easiest path forward is to build a relationship with your customers by sending them to your fan page, where they will (ideally) opt in to your email list. Keep in mind, too, that obtaining email addresses is just the beginning. You need to explore the questions: 'What happens after they click ‘Like\'?' and 'What kinds of email followups am I sending?'
Spend some time fine-tuning your sales funnel and keep tabs on your ad campaigns and you\'ll be rewarded in the end.

Facebook Targeting

If you aren\'t finding much luck by advertising on Facebook, perhaps one of your problems is targeting. This is one step in your ads that can make a huge difference in whether you find success with your campaign or not.
You have to make sure you are targeting the right market in order to have a successful campaign but, how do you do it?
Here are a few steps to help you choose the right demographics for your campaign.
1) Start by thinking about who your primary customer is. This should be relatively simple, but here are a few examples.
Your Product is a recipe ebook. Generally it will be sold to women who cook. What else can you think of that would describe a woman who cooks? Possibly married, a mom, etc.
So, what would be in her profile? I could be a description of her children, married as her relationship status, etc. Now you can use these ideas to help you choose keywords and ages for your campaign.
Let\'s try another example:
You are selling a dog potty training product. What ages and what keywords could you target? To start with, you will want adults, so begin with early 20′s and go up to 40′s or 50′s. Then you want to choose someone who likes animals, has pets, likes dogs, etc.
2) Use some tools to help you choose your demographics. One tool is Quantcast. This is a website that tells you about the demographics of different websites. When you visit Quantcast . com you are going to type in a domain that your target market will often visit. For the recipe book, you\'ll want to use a site like allrecipes . com. Let\'s look at the results:
facebooktargeting 1 300x214 Facebook Targeting
What you see here, are the ages, sex, income, race, and education of the people that are most likely to visit allrecipes . com. On the bottom of the image you see other websites they are likely to visit. You can use this information to choose keywords your market likes in your campaign.
3) Now that you have some decent information about your target market, you should play with it a bit. See what you can bid on and put in a few different websites and grab the demographics for them. You\'ll want to make a different campaign for each demographic you think will convert for your product. The more targeted each campaign is, the more likely you are to find the one with the most success, and those that aren\'t making you money.
Another tool you can play with is http://www.compete.com it also shows demographics that will be helpful in building your campaign. What other tools or advice do you have in building a campaign for Facebook?
